Lately I’ve been reading this book called With by Skye Jethani. It’s all about how God wants to be with us. Being with us, was the reason Jesus came to earth and went to the Cross.
But it’s also about how we incorrectly view God. The writer summarized them in these 4 different postures.
Sometimes people live with a life under God posture. In order to get the blessings, you’ve got to appease God with moral living. Bad things happening? It’s probably due to your sin.
Or people will live with a life over God posture. Follow the 5 steps, apply these Jesus principles to your work, have these 8 points to picking the right spouse. God is deduced to effective principles and gauged by how much success happens.
We can also live a life from God. We come to view God like we see ourselves. We mistake our own desires for the character and nature of God. Our perspective of God begins to be formed by our thoughts, ambitions, desires rather than His Word.
Lastly, we can live life for God. We do all the right things, we serve in church, we give our money…but the mission becomes our mission. Rather than the mission being to know God, we find our identity in doing.
I admittedly haven’t finished the book yet.
I’m still in the part about living with God.
Honestly, living with God is way messier, complex, and awe inspiring than any of those other postures.
But I know fullness and identity and true hope is there…with God.
The words of Jesus come to mind. “I am with you always, until the end of time.” (Matthew 28:20)
When he left, Jesus told his followers “I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again. Then I will bring you into my presence so that you will be where I am.” (John 14)
Later on in that conversation, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to come live within each of us.
Even today, that still is our reality.
As I reflect, I’m struck by how God wants to just be with us.
He simply wants to have fellowship with the people he loves.
I’m sure there’s more for me to realize. As I do, I will write.
For now, there’s more pages to read.
